Jeera-Pepper Kadhi (Jeer-mirya kadi)
This is one of my favorite Konkani dishes. My Aayi is an expert in preparing this. Since we add cumin seeds(jeera) and pepper(miryakan) to this, it is good for health. I used to eat a lot more when this dish was prepared. I love to pair this with some lemon pickle. A lot of garlic is added to this gravy to give that amazing aroma.
Ingredients:
1 cup fresh/frozen coconut
1 tea spn cumin seeds(jeera)
1 tea spn coriander seeds
6-7 peppercorns
3-4 red chillies
1/4 tea spn tamarind extract or 1-2 pieces of normal tamarind
1-2 tea spns finely chopped garlic
Oil
Salt
Method:
Heat oil and fry cumin, coriander seeds, pepper and red chillies. Grind with coconut, tamarind and salt. Heat the ground masala with sufficient water(to a consistency of sambar) for 10min. Heat oil in a pan. Add garlic, when they turn to brownish, add to the cooked masala. Serve with hot rice.

I love this dish, usually I like it with rice and potato talaasani, and cucumber kosumbari and a nice papad for some crunch.
Check out this variation my pachhi makes…yummy with batata saung or kale padi (raw banana fry)
A good sized tamrind, literally a golf ball sized
2 tsp Jeera
1 tbsp Black pepper( whole, not grounded one)
as much garlic as you like, i usually put 10-12 jumbo garlic
2-3 red chillies
1 sprig curry leaf
some oil
salt to taste
Soak tamrind in enough water, pulp it out. Add enough water about 3 glass. Let it boil. Meanwhile dry roast Jeera
and Black pepper. Powder Jeera & pepper coarsely. Now, i like the traditional way of stone crushing, but u can always use the electrical blender. But don’t make it too nice a powder. Let it be coarse. Add this powder to tamrind water. Let it boil for about 5 mins. Heat oil. Crush garlic. I usually crush by keeping it in ziplock bag and gentlly hit with steel glass bottom. Crush don’t pulp. Fry this garlic to very light brown in oil with broken red chillies, like vagarne add it to boiling tamrind jeerae-meerae water. Boil for another 2-3 mins. add curry leaf to tamrind water. add salt…..yummy jeerae-meerae saaru is ready. It tastes really good with brown rice (mangalore style not chinese/thai brown rice), batata saung or Kale padi. and ofcourse jeevkadgi

Hey sounds nice. When I was at a Primary Heath centre in January, the lady out there used to make a preparation of prawns called “jira miryatli kolambi” (Kolambi is prawns in Marathi). She ofcourse wasn’t an Amchi lady but I had asked her the recipe and it was somewhat similar to this. After the coconut etc was ground to a paste(she used dried coconut), she fried prawns with oil and onions and then add the “curry” and cook it further. Was heaven!

Carol, I didn’t add turmeric. The color largely depends on the type of chilies used. My chilies don’t give a bright red color, so it looks yellowish in the picture.

I prepared the curry for today’s lunch. It turned out very nice.
I added a little turmeric to enhance the look. My mom adds Avlaa during grinding since this recipe is supposed to have curative power for indigestion.

Jeer-mirya kadi is awesome. However, I think it tastes better without garlic; garlic cuts into the aroma of freshly-roasted pepper and jeera.

Dear Shilpa, i made this for yesterdays lunch and it was really good with hot rice, i did not add garlic since yesterday was a saturday but a little jaggery at the end along with curry leaves. My hus loved it very much, thanks a lot.
